How to Grow Superbum Angraecum Orchids

The orchid species Angraecum eburneum is native to the forests of eastern Africa and Indian Ocean islands, favoring hot and humid environments. The plant also grows without soil. Although Angraecum eburneum orchids attach themselves to the trunks of trees, they are not parasites. Having the support allows the roots to tap into the moisture available in the air. In addition, it puts the plants higher up, where light is more available. This orchid's fragrant white flowers bloom in the fall and winter. The species produces two varieties in the wild; Superbum has the largest blossoms.

Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate Angraecum eburneum outdoors in USDA hardiness zones 12 to 15 or inside a greenhouse. Provide them a lot of humidity in the air. This orchid species grows more than 3 feet and it might not adapt to the conditions inside a house. Indoors, plant it in a pot filled with coarse bark chunks.

    • 2

Grow Angraecum orchids in bright daylight, but away from direct sun. Tie them to a tree whose canopy filters the light. Use a piece of twine to fasten the orchid at first. Untie the plant after the roots become attached to the trunk. Indoors, place it at a west or south-facing window where a sheer curtain reduces the sun's intensity.

    • 3

Irrigate the plants regularly to keep the roots moist. Keep the air humidity high. If you turn the air conditioner on to get relief from the heat, for example, run a humidifier where the orchid is.

    • 4

Feed the Superbum an orchid fertilizer or fish emulsion. Follow the instructions on the label for the correct application rates. Spray the feed on the roots of outdoor plants climbing on tree trunks.

    • 5

Prune dead and diseased stems. Clip faded flowers. Make your cuts back to where the plant part you are trimming sprouted. Leave no stubs.
