How to Care for Phalaenopsis Orchids When the Flowers Fall Off

Phalaenopsis orchids, also called moth orchids, are native the Southeast Asia. They grow in a tropical climate attached to trees as epiphytes, meaning they have air roots. Since they have no storage system for water their planting medium needs to be moist at all times. Fertilize only if the orchids are actively growing. After the flowers fade and fall off the orchid can stay dormant for a while, but you don't have to care for it any differently.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the flower spikes on the Phalaenopsis orchid if they turn brown after the flower falls off. Cut the flower spike off at the point it turns from brown to green.

    • 2

Keep the Phalaenopsis orchid near bright but indirect sunlight, like a bright window. Place a humidifier near the orchid to keep the humidity in the room between 50 to 80 percent.

    • 3

Water the orchid when the potting mixture is getting dry. Add enough water that it drips out of the bottom of the container.

    • 4

Keep the temperature around the Phalaenopsis orchid between 70 and 82 degrees F during the day and between 70 and 60 degrees at night.

    • 5

Start fertilizing your Phalaenopsis orchid when new growth appears. Add ½ tsp. to 1 tsp. of water-soluble fertilizer to 1 gallon of water in a watering can. Mix with a long spoon until the fertilizer is dissolved. Pour the fertilizer-enriched water into the orchid's growing medium until water starts to drain through the drainage holes. Use fertilizer each time you water when the weather is warm. When the weather cools, reduce the fertilizer application to every third time you water the Phalaenopsis orchid.
