How to Measure the Health of Orchids

Look at the color of the orchid leaves. Healthy orchid leaves are a medium-green color, yellow leaves indicate the plant is receiving too much light, and dark green foliage indicates too little light. Place your orchid in a south-facing windowsill to give the orchid the correct amount of light.

Check the moisture level of the potting mix. Too much water may cause root rot, and too little water may limit plant growth and blooming. Keep the plant healthy with high humidity levels, by spraying water around the plant or by placing it in a humid location such as a bathroom. Water the plant when the soil is dry an inch down.

Apply a balanced fertilizer specifically intended for orchids while the plant is blooming. Decrease fertilization as the plant goes into dormancy. Follow the product packaging for quantities and frequency of application.
