Place your orchid in a room that receives filtered bright light. You should not put it in direct sunlight. During the winter, place it near a window that receives full southern exposure.
Keep the room temperature where you are storing your Phalaenopsis between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and no lower than 60 F at night. For mature plants, drop the temperature down to 50 F at night during the winter, which encourages new growth.
Maintain a humidity level between 50 and 80 percent. Either you can use a room humidifier or you can put the orchid pot on top of a tray that is filled with pebbles and water. The water level in the tray should be below the pot so that root rot does not develop.
Spray the orchid and soil with room-temperature water as soon as the soil nearly dries out. Be careful not to get any water on the crown.
Fertilize the orchid once every third watering when it is in active growth, which should be sometime during the spring and summer. Add 1 tsp. of a 20-20-20 fertilizer to a gallon of water, and then use that solution to water the orchid.
Remove the top 1/2 inch of the orchid's stem as soon as the flower or flowers have faded. This encourages blooming the following year.
