Since most people know that cold temperatures quickly kill many plants, gardeners may cringe when told to water their Phalaenopsis orchids with ice cubes. However, ice cubes are actually a safe and healthy way to supply moisture to the orchids. Phalaenopsis orchids die quickly when over-watered. When you place ice cubes on the top of the soil, the cubes melt slowly and avoid saturating the roots. In addition, the ice helps provide the cool temperatures the orchids need to induce blooming.
