Fill a flower pot with an inch layer of stones or pebbles to aid drainage of water. Stones in the pot prevent the holes from getting blocked and the water accumulating. Add a good quantity of bark on top so the pot is half full.
Hold the orchid stem near to the top and position it so the roots of the stem are resting on the bark. Add more of the same bark to the pot so the roots are completely buried and the stem can support itself standing upright.
Sprinkle water over the bark until moist. Be careful not to over water, as orchids do not thrive when they are wet. The bark should ideally dry out between each watering. Add a few splashes of liquid fertilizer to the pot to help the stem establish itself.
Place your orchid on a sunny, south-facing windowsill or in the greenhouse. Orchids need a large amount of light, so ensure they get plenty each day.
