How to Grow & Sell Orchids

There are numerous different species of orchids, including a huge number of hybrids, which means that there is always a specimen just perfect for growing in the conditions and climate that you can provide. Contrary to popular belief, orchids are not that difficult to grow. They have specific requirements, however, and will die if planted in potting soil or compost, because they grow by anchoring themselves onto material such as bark or rocks.

  1. How to Grow Orchids

    • 1

Take a flower pot or other deep container and fill half of it with the organic matter you are using to grow the orchid in. Hold the orchid bulb by its "head" so the roots are dangling down and fill in the rest of the pot with the organic material. The result should be the roots submerged with the main bulb exposed.

    • 2

Water the orchid very gently. Orchids do not need very much water and it is always better to underwater them rather than overwater. The plant will let you know whether it needs more water because it will shrivel slightly.

    • 3

Place the pot onto a very sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse. Orchids need a large amount of light. A south facing windowsill is ideal, as it provides a good amount of light but not too much heat.

    How to Sell Orchids

    • 4

Repot your orchid stems into decorative or colorful pots. The container in which an orchid sits is as important as the appearance of the stem itself. Use a square, metal box for a modern and contemporary twist, or a weathered terracotta pot for a traditional and stylish feel.

    • 5

Sell your orchids to friends, neighbors and family at first. This will enable you to get a feel for the market and receive feedback on presentation, customer care and the overall service provided.

    • 6

Place a notice or sign up at the front of your house advertising your orchid stems for sale. This can be a great way to attract interest for your product. You could even advertise in the local paper.

    • 7

Attend local farmers' markets and organic vegetable markets in your area. You can have a stall at all the regular markets in your area to help sell your orchids. You could even set up a website with information about how they are grown and how to order them.
