How to Care for a Red Black Vanda Orchid

Vanda orchids come in a variety of colors, including the Red Black vanda orchid. It's actually a dark red orchid belonging to the mericlone family. Vandas are tropical, full-sun orchids that can be grown outside in a container during the summer and inside during the winter in a sunny room. Native to places such as Indonesia and the Phillipines, vandas require specific conditions to thrive in your home garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the red black vanda in a coarse orchid potting medium that contains fir bark and peat moss. This will aid in the proper drainage and aeration of the vanda orchid.

    • 2

Select an area such as a sunny deck or garden patio to place the orchid. The ideal location should have full morning sun with afternoon shade.

    • 3

Monitor the leaves, making sure they're light to medium green. If they're dark green, they aren't receiving appropriate sun and may need to be moved. During the winter, place the orchid on a table near a sunny spot, such as a south-facing window.

    • 4

Water frequently, checking the soil with your finger to verify if it's dry. During the hot summer, the orchids may require daily watering. Irrigate with lukewarm water for approximately 15 seconds or until the water runs out of the drainage holes. Water sparingly during the winter months.

Feed the vanda orchid with a balanced fertilizer such as 20-20-20. The American Orchid Society recommends fertilizing once a week using one-fourth the suggested amount on the fertilizer's directions instead of the full amount once a month. Water the orchid thoroughly, then sprinkle the fertilizer on top of the soil and water again. This will prevent the roots from burning.
