How to Use Coconut Husk Chips for Orchids

Orchids are bright, elegant plants and are available in a wide range of species and cultivars. All orchids do best with soft, indirect lighting and good air movement, and need loose, organic potting media. Plant or re-pot orchids in airy foundations, like coconut husks, to guarantee quick drainage and good air circulation around the roots.

Instructions

    • 1

Re-pot your orchids when they outgrow their old pots. The best time for re-potting is during periods of active growth. Choose a new clay, stone or plastic pot with a drainage hole, one size larger than the old pot. Orchids do better in close, secure pots.

    • 2

Fill the new pot halfway with small, medium or large coconut husk chips. All three types provide nutritional support and drainage for orchid roots. Small chips may provide a more secure planting while large chips offer more air and drainage.

    • 3

Turn the orchid pot on its side and tap firmly to loosen any potting soil. Pull the orchid out of its pot and brush off any old potting medium. Cut back rotten or broken roots to encourage healthy new growth.

Spread the roots on the coconut husk chips and fill the new pot to the top with more chips. These make a loose foundation and won't secure the plant alone, so push a bamboo orchid stake into the foundation next to the plant. Secure any flower stalks to the stake with small clips or soft ties.
