Terrestrial Orchids

• The terrestrial is one of the most popular types of orchids, originating from Australia, South East Asia and Japan. Terrestrial orchids grow well on the ground as well as on trees and amongst rocks. They have been cultivated and sold for many years and are popular with plant enthusiasts because they can be cultivated into various sizes and shapes. The fragrance is often described as amazing.

Angraecum Orchids

• This species of orchid is native only to some parts of East Africa and the island of Madagascar. The plant can grow up to three feet and the leaves are strong and wiry. The flowers are large, compared to most orchids, and they stand out due to their shape, size and color. The flowers are white or ivory and most are fragrant.

Catteleya Orchids

• This category of orchid has approximately 50 species and even more hybrids. It is native to tropical regions of the American continents. Any of the varieties can be grown as house plants but they require a lot of light. Each stem can hold up to 10 flowers, although this does depend on the type. The petals are pinkish red and come in a variety of attractive shapes.

Cymbidium Orchids

• These flowers prefer cool conditions and are connected with the cooler and more mountainous regions of Asia. The leaves can grow as big as 30 inches. The productive stalk will usually have flowers along it and the size and color of these will be dependent on the cross-cultivation that was engineered to produce it. One popular variety has distinctive petals of subtle pink with darker lines of the same color running from bottom to top.

The Moth Orchid

• This orchid originates from the Southern Hemisphere, mainly Java and the Philippine Islands. It likes warm but shady conditions. The leaves are rather flat and round and the stems can produce tens of flowers. They are often white but can be cross-bred to produce various colors, shades and mix of colors. One exotic looking variety has different shades of purple.
