How to Cut a Bloom Spike on a Kaleidoscope Orchid

The Kaleidoscope Orchid, also known as Baldin's Kaleidoscope or the Moth Orchid, is a Phalaenopsis orchid. It blooms big, beautiful petals atop long, tall stem. When the petals start to fall off, that doesn't necessarily mean the flower is dead. Cutting the stem will allow the flower to rebloom. Sometimes the stem will turn brown, but cutting lower on the stem will still allow the flower rebloom too. Petals tend to fall in late June and July and bloom again the early fall.

• Cinnamon
• Candle wax

     Wait until the last petal drops.

     Follow the spike down to the bottom of the stem and cut with a pair of scissors. The alternative is to cut just above the node on the stem.

   • 3

     Place a pinch of cinnamon or melt candle wax on the top of the cut stem.
