How to Arrange a Natural Orchid

Orchids are striking, but picky, flowers. These simple beauties hail from the mountains and forests of Asia and South and Central America, and require airy, quick-draining planting foundations. Make larger orchid arrangements with wide, shallow containers for more impact, and keep them in appropriate locations for continued growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the orchids in a wide, shallow container for multiple plantings and arranging. Choose a 4- to 5-inch-deep container with drainage holes, and leave 3 to 4 inches of space for each orchid.

    • 2

Fill the container halfway full of a loose, airy, non-soil foundation like peat moss, orchid potting medium, wood bark or gravel. Orchids require drainage and air circulation in the foundation and fail in traditional soil.

    • 3

Choose planting spots and spread each orchid's roots over the foundation. Arrange the orchids so that their flower stalks grow away from each other for better impact and spacing. Cover the roots with planting medium to fill the pots and secure the plantings. Pack peat moss or fern matter down firmly for better security.

Push a bamboo orchid stake into the foundation next to each flower stalk. Clip the stalks to the stakes for support and security. This also secures looser mediums like peat moss and fern matter.

Water the orchids with 2 inches of water and place them in a site with bright. indirect light or morning light and afternoon shade. Most orchids thrive with indirect, soft light, and may burn in bright or harsh all-day light.
