How to Keep an Orchid Upright

Most varieties of orchids bloom only once a year. For both types of orchids, whether spray orchids such as Phalaenopsis or those with a single flower such as cattleyas, staking helps the plant grow properly and develop straight blooms. The flower spikes grow in the direction of the light, so keep this in mind as you stake the plant.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a bamboo or wire stake at the base of the spray-type orchid when the spike is about 12 inches long. Twist the stake as it is inserted into the soil to help prevent root damage.

    • 2

Attach hook-and-loop tape strips or twist ties to the stake and spike. Continue attaching strips or ties every 3 or 4 inches up the spike. Use clear hair clips in place of twist ties or hook-and-loop tape strips, if desired.

    • 3

Insert a bamboo or wire stake at the base of a single flower--type orchid when its buds begin to swell.

    • 4

Place the last tie or hair clip one to two nodes away from the first flower to allow for a graceful arch.
