How Do I Care for Plumbago Auriculata Inside for the Winter?

The plumbago plant (Plumbago auriculata) is an evergreen shrub with abundant pale blue flowers. It is commonly known as Cape Leadwort or Cape Plumbago. Plumbago auriculata plants provide a spray of color to gardens and landscapes from spring through fall. Although it's most suited to the warm climates of Florida and California, you can grow the plants in containers that you can bring indoors for protection and continued growth over the winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant plumbago in a pot or container that you can move easily. Sandy soil that is slightly acidic is best.

    • 2

Bring the container indoors before the first frost.

    • 3

Place the plant in a sunny location. Plumbago tolerates partial shade, but flowering is reduced.

    • 4

Water the plant as it dries out. Plumbago is drought resistant, but with drier indoor air the plant may need additional watering to keep it growing over the winter.

    • 5

Fertilize the plant monthly with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season.

    • 6

Cut the stems back hard at the end of winter to encourage new growth.

    • 7

Return the plant to its sunny outdoor location in the spring, after the threat of hard frosts is over.
