How to Grow Grass in Pebbles

Growing grass, though typically achieved using only soil, can be grown with pebbles for a decorative and useful touch. Though grass roots will adhere to pebbles, a small amount of soil is required to provide the grass with essential nutrients. Pebbles used in container gardening help lessen upkeep as the drainage provided by pebbles helps maintain optimal moisture levels for roots. Clear glass containers or trays create a distinctive decorating look with the pebbles layers visible under the grass. Buy pebbles or find them outdoors a cost effective approach to indoor gardening.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bottom of a clear container with a two-inch layer of pebbles. Flatten out the pebbles using your hands and inspect the container by looking through all sides to ensure the pebbles are evenly dispersed.

    • 2

Add a one- to two-inch layer of multipurpose soil on top of the pebbles. Press down the soil to get an even and level surface.

    • 3

Place grass seeds directly on the top of the soil and press the seeds down slightly to cover. Sprinkle additional soil on top, ensuring all seeds are under soil. Mist the top of the planted seeds with water to saturate.

    • 4

Gently place additional pebbles on top of the soil layer to hide the soil layer.

    • 5

Place in a sunny location and continue watering -- with a spray mister or watering can -- once every two to three days to keep the soil and planted seeds moist. Continue watering the grass every few days and keep it trimmed using a pair of household scissors or garden shears.
