How to Hang Plant Pulley Systems

Watering hanging plants is not always easy when you have to balance on a stool or reach above your head with a watering can, all the while trying not to soak yourself. A plant pulley system solves that problem with a ratchet mechanism that lets you gently lower and raise your plants for watering. Hang your plant pulley system in the right spot, and with the proper hardware, to maximize its convenience and longevity.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your hanging site. Make sure you pick a spot where your plant will receive the appropriate amount of shade or sunlight. Avoid spots where the pulley system could get caught up in ceiling fixtures such as chandeliers and ceiling fans.

    • 2

Drill a hole in the ceiling with a 5/8-inch drill bit.

    • 3

Screw the threaded end of the hook into the toggle until the wings of the toggle open up and the threaded end of the hook emerges from the other side of the toggle. Hold the screw in front of you with the hook on the bottom and the toggle on top. The toggle should resemble a pitched roof over the hook. If the toggle looks like a "V" over the hook, you have it on backwards.

    • 4

Push the threaded end of the bolt gently through the hole in the ceiling. Keep pushing until the wings of the toggle go through the hole and you feel the wings pop, or spread out, on the other side of the hole.

    • 5

Pull down on the hook with light pressure and turn it clockwise. If you can hear the wings of the toggle scraping on the other side of the hole as you turn it, you need to pull down harder. You need enough pressure to keep the wings in place as you turn the hook. Keep turning the hook until all of the threads have disappeared into the hole in the ceiling

Place the loop on the top of your plant pulley into the hook in the ceiling, then attach your hanging plant from the hook on the bottom of the pulley. Raise and lower your hanging plant at will.
