How to Build an Indoor Mini Grow House

Starting seeds and seedlings indoors provides a protected environment so they can grow strong with consistent light, warmth and water. Even indoors temperature and moisture fluctuations can weaken the young plants, especially if you grow them near a drafty window. Making a mini grow house provides a greenhouselike environment that fits on a windowsill or beneath a growing lamp. The seedlings benefit from the moist soil and warmth the grow house provides until you are ready to transplant them out to the garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the label from a 2-liter clear plastic bottle. Wash the bottle in a solution of 1 part bleach and 9 parts water so it is clean and sterilized.

    • 2

Cut the bottom third off the bottle using a utility knife. Cover the cut edge with a piece of masking tape so the sharp plastic doesn't pose a hazard.

    • 3

Poke six holes in the bottle bottom with a large nail. These holes provide drainage so the soil doesn't become soggy.

    • 4

Fill the bottle bottom with moistened potting soil to within 1/2 inch of the rim. Sow seeds or seedlings in the soil.

    • 5

Make a 3-inch slit in the side of the top portion of the bottle, beginning at the cut bottom edge and slicing upward. Cover the cut bottom edge with masking tape, but don't tape over the slit.

    • 6

Slide the bottle top over the bottle bottom to create the lid for the mini grow house. Remove the cap from the bottle to allow air circulation after seeds germinate. Remove the top and water the soil as necessary, replacing the top after each watering.
