How to Make Bows for Plants

Dressing up a plant with a bow creates a centerpiece for a party or wedding and is also an option for decorating houseplants for the holidays. Plant bows can also be used on patio or garden plants to create an interesting look. Making a bow takes just a few minutes and the materials are inexpensive and are available at fabric or craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the ribbon out on a flat surface. This ensures that you are getting the proper amount for your bow. Rolling the ribbon out on the floor or a chair makes it difficult to see how much you have.

    • 2

Cut the ribbon. The length depends on the size of the plant. A large tree-style plant will require more ribbon than a small potted plant. Another option is to unroll the ribbon, tie the bow and then cut it.

    • 3

Position the ribbon on the plant. Decide where you want the bow to be and place the ribbon on the back side of the stem in that area. Make sure you have an even length of ribbon on either side to prevent a lopsided bow.

    • 4

Make a loop on both ends of the ribbon and hold in place with your fingers. This is different than tying a shoe because the loops need to cross at the same time to ensure that they lay evenly rather than twisting up or down.

    • 5

Cross the loops and bring one through the hole that is created. Pull tightly. This will create the knot that will keep the bow from coming undone.

    • 6

Adjust the bow as necessary. Pull the loops or tails to make both sides of the bow symmetrical. Twist the bow around the stem of the plant until it is sitting where you want it. Wiggle it up or down as needed.
