How to Make an Asian Money Plant Branch Out

The Asian money plant goes by several names and is most often called a Chinese money tree (Pachira aquatica). Considered to bring good luck or wealth, the tree's five-branched leaves are thought to represent the five feng shui elements: water, earth, fire, wood and metal. The smaller, indoor form of the plant grows to three feet high. Proper planting and care encourage the plant to branch out.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the Asian money plant in a large pot to allow for growth using a mix of half potting soil and half garden sand. A cactus potting soil mix can be used for this evergreen. For maximum branch growth, place the plant in a window so it receives several hours of partial sunlight a day. Money plants thrive in moderate temperatures. If grown outside, the plant must be moved indoors when the temperature dips below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water the money plant thoroughly but allow the soil to dry between waterings. The plant branches out better if it is not over watered. However, the plant enjoys humid conditions. Mist it or set it in a tray of wet pebbles to increase the humidity.

Prune the Asian money plant on a regular basis to promote healthy branch growth. Remove branches that are shedding leaves or are too thin with a small pruning tool so that the plant's energy goes to branching out new, healthy growth.

Remove pests regularly from the Asian money plant. Check the Asian money plant for mealybugs, aphids and red spider mites, which can attack the plant and cause leaves and branches to die. Left uncontrolled, these pests can eventually kill the plant. To prevent pest invasions, regularly mist the Asian money plant with a mixture of half water and half rubbing alcohol.
