How to Revive a Spathiphyllum Floor Plant

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum), most often used as houseplants, have full, lush greenery with an oval-shaped appearance and fragrant, hooded white flowers. They grow between 1 and 6 feet tall with proper maintenance. If your peace lily experiences wilting or yellowing leaves, it could be caused by improper sun exposure, watering issues or excessive fertilization. The right balance of care can quickly revive peace lilies to a healthy state. Peace lilies can be grown outdoors throughout the year in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 11 through 12.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the peace lily in an area that receives bright, filtered sunlight. Place it a few feet from any window in a room that receives sunlight throughout the day. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn on peace lilies.

    • 2

Maintain temperatures between 68 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit in your home. A nighttime temperature decrease of 10 degrees is desirable for peace lilies. Temperatures below 50 degrees can slow the growth of peace lilies.

    • 3

Water peace lilies thoroughly until water drips out of the bottom of the pot. Use room temperature water and allow it to sit in a watering can for a few minutes before watering the plant to evaporate the chlorine. Distilled or bottled water also work well. The soil should feel moist at a depth of 1 inch. Don't over-saturate the soil or allow it to completely dry out. Over-watering might cause rot, while too little water causes leaf yellowing and wilted flowers.

    • 4

Fertilize peace lilies no more than once every two or three months with 1/4 teaspoon 20-20-20 water-soluble fertilizer mixed into 1 gallon of water. Replace one watering with this solution. Over-fertilization could cause yellow or brown leaf edges.

    • 5

Wipe off the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dust that accumulates.

    • 6

Spray the plant thoroughly with insecticidal soap once a week to kill any pests such as mealybugs, scale or spider mites. Stop spraying the plant once the pests are gone.
