How to Kill Lepiota lutea

Lepiota lutea is the botanical name for a mushroom commonly called yellow parasol or flower pot parasol. The mushrooms are bright yellow when they emerge, gradually fading to almost white as they mature. Lepiota lutea mushrooms grow up to 3 inches tall and have caps that measure 2 inches across. The mushrooms thrive in shaded, moist locations, making the soil of houseplants an ideal place for the spores to develop. Lepiota lutea mushrooms cause potted plants no problems, but are toxic to humans and animals. Use a combination of methods to kill the mushrooms and discourage their return.

Instructions

    • 1

Break off the caps of Lepiota lutea at soil level when they appear. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the mushrooms.

    • 2

Remove the top 2 inches of potting soil, and replace it with a fresh layer of soil.

    • 3

Change the potting soil completely if the mushrooms continue to appear.

    • 4

Move the pot to a less humid location, unless high humidity is crucial to the houseplant's growth.

    • 5

Treat the potting soil with fungicide if the problem persists. Repeated treatments may be necessary if the mushrooms continue to emerge. Follow fungicide instructions carefully, and keep the product away from children and pets.
