How to Build a Carbon Air Scrubber

While air filters can remove many fine particles out of air, a number of common filters, including HEPA filters, are limited in their ability to remove small particles and chemical compounds such as those generated from fertilizers, decaying organic materials and the plants themselves. Activated carbon filters excel at removing these unwanted smells, allergens and contaminants from air.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • Leather work gloves
  • Aluminum screening
  • Tape measure
  • Tin snips
  • Masking tape
  • Activated aquarium carbon

Instructions

    • 1

Don the safety glasses and leather gloves. Unroll the aluminum screen to expose a few feet of screening.

    • 2

Use the tape measure and tip snips to cut the screen into a 62 inch-by-24 inch rectangle. Measure 2 inches in from each side of the long edges and tape a line of masking tape along each 54-inch long edge. Measure 6 inches inside one of the short 24 inch edges and tape a line of masking tape. On the other long edge, measure down 20 inches for the final line of masking tape to complete a rectangle on the aluminum screening.

    • 3

Spread a thin layer of activated carbon for an aquarium within the rectangle laid out in masking tap on the screening. Spread the carbon evenly to the outside edge of the masking tape.

    • 4

Place the 6-inch duct end cap at the left side of the screen that is 62 inches long with the 20 inches of blank screen with no carbon. Place the 6-inch inline fan on the right side. Tear off a short section of duct tape and secure 2 to 3 inches of screen to the inline fan and duct end.

    • 5

Slowly roll the duct and and fan towards the carbon end, ensuring the screen rolls evenly and tightly. Every revolution, stop and tear off a small section of duct tape to secure the screen to the fan and duct end. When the carbon and screen is completely rolled up, tape the screen seam with duct tape. Tape the duct end and fan tightly to the edges of the screening.

    • 6

Stand the carbon air scrubber flat on the duct end. Plug in the cord of the fan to test the carbon air scrubber.
