How to Care for a Potted Yellow China Mum

What appears as the flower on a chrysanthemum is really a grouping of numerous miniature flowers. This long-established fall flower, known scientifically as Dendranthema grandiflorum, has grown in China for more than 2,000 years and now includes several varieties that are sold as potted plants, with yellow being the most common color. Potted yellow China mums survive up to a month with the proper care.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the potted yellow mums in a location with bright light, but not direct sunlight. Choose a place close to a window or near a glass door.

    • 2

Check the soil daily and water the potted mum as needed to maintain moist, but not soggy soil. Add water until it flows from the bottom drainage holes of the container and then remove the excess water.

    • 3

Remove any ornamental wrapping on the potted yellow mums, or create four or more holes in the wrapping to permit proper drainage.

    • 4

Pinch or cut off any dead leaves or spent flowers. Do not fertilize the potted mum.
