How to Trim Mexican Breadfruit Plants

The Mexican breadfruit plant, also known as the split-leaf philodendron or the Swiss cheese plant, is actually an evergreen vine with a woody stem. In the wild, this plant produces massive leaves that reach lengths of 2 to 3 feet, and may climb to heights of 20 feet or more. Those grown inside are typically maintained to the height of the totem provided for support.

Determine the overall height you desire for your Mexican breadfruit plant. Because this plant continues to grow, the support you provide it typically determines it height. If you wish to grow a taller plant, give it a taller support system.

    • 2

Examine the foliage on the terminal end of the vine. Healthy foliage can be cut at any point, dead or dying foliage requires more aggressive pruning. Trim away any damaged leaves.

    • 3

Cut the vine back 6 to 8 inches shorter than the desired height. Use a sharp knife to make the cut about 1/2 inch beyond a leaf node. This encourages new growth from the leaf node. Cutting the vine several inches shorter than the desired length allows room for the plant to grow before you need to cut it back again.
