Why Would a Plant Be Leaning Toward a Window?

Light

• Plants need different levels of light. If a plant is leaning toward a window, it means the plant isn't getting the amount of light that it needs. Phototropism, which means the plant organs curve or move in the direction of the light, is occurring. This may be because it is too far away from the window. When the plant is farther away from a window, the room becomes darker. If the plant is seeking more light to grow, it will lean in the direction of the brightest light.

Correction

• Correct the problem by placing the plant closer to the light source. Most plants need direct or filtered sunlight. If the plant needs direct sunlight, place the plant in an eastern or southern window. If the plant needs filtered light, place the plant in a southern, eastern or western window with a sheer curtain to filter the light.

Turning the Plant

• After placing the plant in the correct location, you need to turn the plant one-quarter turn once a week so that the entire plant can absorb the sun. If you move the plant to the window and the plant continues to lean one way, it is because only one side of the plant is getting the direct or filtered sunlight. Thick or bushy plants need to be rotated weekly so each side of the plant gets sunlight.

Artificial Light

• Plants that lean toward a window but cannot be moved closer to the window will benefit from artificial light sources. This can come from a plant grow light, overhead fluorescent light or incandescent light from a table lamp or ceiling light. The plants will eventually stand upward when the overhead light is supplied.
