Place the Japanese magnolia in a location the receives sunlight for several hours. Choose a location outside on a balcony, patio or deck area that receives morning sunlight. Otherwise, place the tree near a window or glass door.
Water the tree regularly during the natural growing season, which runs from spring to fall. Add water until it flows from the bottom of the container, but always remove any leftover water in the drainage tray.
Wait until the soil dries a few inches down before watering again. Water the Japanese magnolia less during the winter, when the tree becomes dormant.
Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, diluted to half-strength, every year in the spring and reapply until fall as directed. Another option is to use a time-release fertilizer that lasts several months in place of monthly feedings.
Move the Japanese magnolia tree indoors during the winter in areas with winter freezes. Otherwise, protect the roots by wrapping the container with blankets or other insulating material.
Prune only as needed to maintain the shape and health of the Japanese magnolia tree. The best time to prune is after the spring bloom period.
