Place the pot in an east-facing window or another window that receives bright sunlight. Flowering plants typically benefit from direct sun before they flower and indirect but bright light after flowering.
Maintain a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the room where the flowers are displayed. Lower nighttime temperatures between 55 and 60 F may prolong flowering during the blooming season.
Water the plant as frequently as necessary for the plant type. Most flowering plants require moist soil when in bloom but can tolerate slightly drier conditions after flowering. Water the pots until the excess drains from the bottom, then empty the collected water from the drip tray beneath the pot.
Fertilize flowering houseplants only when they are actively putting on new growth. This is typically in the spring and summer but it may be winter for some houseplant varieties, such as poinsettias. Apply a soluble fertilizer formulated for flowering plants once monthly at the rate listed on the package.
Remove old flowers as soon as they begin to wilt. Cut out the flower stem and dispose of it. Old flower removal improves the appearance of your houseplant and may also encourage it to produce more blooms.
