My Xanadu Plant Is Turning Yellow

With their quick growth and easy care, philodendrons are a good choice of houseplant even for people who claim they can't grow anything. Philodendron "Xanadu" grows as a compact and shrubby plant with large, deeply lobed foliage. Although philodendrons require little care, a few problems can cause their leaves to turn yellow. Addressing these issues quickly will keep your Xanadu plant healthy and lush.
  1. Pests

    • As with other philodendrons, the Xanadu plant can become infested with mites and aphids. These pests suck the juices from the plant's leaves and stems, causing the plant to discolor. Looking closely at the plant, especially on new growth, you will notice small white or green insects. The best solution is to take the plant outside and spray it with a strong enough blast of water from the hose to knock off the pests, but not so strong you damage the plant.

    Feeding

    • To grow its large foliage, the Xanadu plant requires frequent feedings. Without regular monthly application of a balanced fertilizer, the leaves of your Xanadu plant will yellow or show stunted growth. Iron deficiency causes yellow leaves in many plants, so make sure your fertilizer contains this important nutrient.

    Soil

    • Xanadu plants prefer an acidic soil. Without the proper pH, your plant won't be able to absorb nutrients efficiently, and this will lead to a nutrient deficiency and yellow leaves. Choose a soil with a peat moss base that is intended for acid-loving plants. The soil must also be kept moist but never soggy. Soggy soil also hinders the plant's ability to take up nutrients, so never over-water your Xanadu plant.

    Natural Processes

    • Over the natural cycle of your Xanadu plant's life, older leaves will turn yellow and die. If you experience only a few yellow leaves at a time and the rest of the plant appears healthy, there may be nothing wrong with your plant. Examine the plant for soggy soil and pests. If there are none, observe your plant for the next couple of weeks for any further problems. If the plant is still growing well, don't fret over a few occasional yellow leaves.
