How to Remove Growth on Bulb From a Ponytail Palm

Although not a true palm plant, a ponytail palm can become a vibrant and attractive houseplant. These slow-growing plants with long and slender foliage can become as tall as 3 feet when you give them the proper moisture and light conditions. A healthy ponytail palm will produce "palm pups" around the mother plant. These offshoots can become new, separate plants if you remove the growth on the bulb from the mature ponytail palm plant.

Things You'll Need

  • Planting container (8-inch diameter)
  • Cactus potting soil
  • Spray bottle (filled with water)
  • Sharp knife
  • Gallon-size plastic bag
  • Rubber band

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the planting container almost to the top with the cactus potting soil. Cactus potting soil provides fast drainage for the ponytail palm, which will keep it healthy. Spray the potting soil surface lightly with water to make it damp.

    • 2

Choose a palm pup that is large enough to grow into a new plant. For the most growing success, separate only a growth that has its own root system. Push away some potting soil from around the plant so you can see the underside of the growth. If you see roots protruding from the bottom side of the growth, it should be ready to grow on its own.

    • 3

Insert the blade of the knife between the mother plant and the growth to sever the growth. Push the knife down to cut the growth off, ensuring that you cut off as much root system with the growth as possible. Continue cutting until you separate the pup completely.

    • 4

Transfer the pup to the new planting container immediately. Nestle the roots into the soil and allow the growth to sit on the surface of the soil. Firm the soil carefully around the root system with your fingers.

    • 5

Place the gallon-size plastic bag over the top of the container to cover the pup. Secure the edge of the bag to the rim of the container with a rubber band.

    • 6

Set the container in a warm location with indirect light and temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the soil evenly moist by removing the bag and spraying the soil surface every day or every other day.

    • 7

Remove the bag when you notice new growth from the pup. Continue to water the soil to keep it moist and the pup will slowly grow into a new ponytail palm.
