How to Make a Miniature Twig Trellis

A twig trellis is a plant support that is easy to construct from twigs and branches you find around the yard. The trellis gives your garden a rustic and traditional look, and it can be used for one season or year round. Most twig trellises for full-sized outdoor plants are up to 7 feet high. Miniature twig trellises are used for smaller plants, such as container-grown dwarf roses or dwarf varieties of any climbing plant that needs support.

Instructions

    • 1

Find straight, unbroken twigs that are two feet or less in length. If you find appropriate twigs that are longer than the others, cut them to size with a sharp knife.

    • 2

Insert three twigs 4 to 6 inches deep into the soil near the plant you want to support. If you are putting the miniature trellis in a pot, insert them near the edge of the container. Space the twigs 2 to 3 inches apart.

    • 3

Gather the tops of the twigs together so they form a teepee shape. Secure the tops by wrapping them in twine, 2 inches from the top.

    • 4

Place the last twig across the middle of the teepee. Lash it to the three other twigs by wrapping it with the twine.
