Place the strawberry pot on a dish large enough to catch any excess water. Set it in the sunniest area of your home, often right in front of a south-facing window. Ideally, strawberry plants should get at least six hours of sunlight a day.
Cover the hole in the planting pot with a piece of screen or small mesh cloth. Then, fill the container and side pockets with moist potting soil -- the kind with the fertilizer already added -- until the holes on the sides are halfway covered.
Plant one strawberry plant per side pocket or hole. Spread the roots out over the soil and into the center of the pot. The green portions of the plants should stick out the holes or grow upright out of the little side pockets. This varies among the different types of strawberry planters.
Continue to fill the center of the pot until the soil is about 2 inches below the rim. If there is another layer of holes or pockets, fill it up with soil until they are halfway covered. Then, plant the next set of strawberries. Repeat as necessary.
Plant three or four more plants in the center of the pot, evenly spaced out. Spread the roots out across the soil. Then cover the roots with 1 inch of soil.
Keep the soil moist during the growing season. To water the lower portions of the pot, use a watering spike. You can also insert a small plastic pipe and drill a few random holes in it at planting time. Then fill the pipe partially with water and the water will seep out the holes and into the bottom and middle portions of the pot. Water the top portion of the pot as normal.
