How to Get Cyclamen to Bloom

While a cyclamen has striking green-and-silver foliage, it's the flowers with their backward-flexed petals that make it special. Cyclamen goes dormant in the spring and re-emerges in fall. The two elements crucial to success in getting cyclamen to bloom are bright light and cool temperatures. Their nodding red, white or pink flowers need specific conditions to guarantee an appearance. With a strict regimen of care, you can bring your cyclamen into bloom every winter.

Allow your cyclamen plant to go dormant in the spring, when flowers fade and leaves turn yellow. Remove and dispose of leaves as they die. Keep the soil barely moist, but don't allow it to dry out completely. Do no disturb the roots. Place your dormant cyclamen in the shade until new leaves emerge.

Move the cyclamen to a spot with bright to full sun around mid-September or when new leaves emerge. Water the plant regularly. Fertilize your plant once a month with a liquid bloom fertilizer.

Maintain day temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and night temperatures around 50 F. Your cyclamen should bloom in mid-winter.
