How to Make a Topiary Tree From a Live Ivy

You can construct a topiary tree in an attractive urn with simple supplies and a live ivy plant. Traditional topiaries are mainstays of formal English gardens and are often nurtured and trimmed into their distinctive shapes over decades. By using a wire armature for the topiary, you will create the shape by winding the ivy tendrils around the wires. These topiaries can be made in any size for indoor or outdoor use.

Things You'll Need

  • Urn
  • 1 pound gravel
  • 3 pounds potting soil
  • Large English ivy plant
  • 20-gauge wire, 10 feet
  • Wire cutters
  • 10-10-10 fertilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Place gravel in the bottom of an urn to help stabilize the completed topiary tree and provide a drainage system. Fill the urn with potting soil. Plant the English ivy in the soil.

    • 2

Cut a 10-foot length of 20-gauge wire in half. Bend each piece of wire in half.

    • 3

Twist the paired ends of the wire for a 1-foot section. Pull open the untwisted sections of the wire with your hands, and mold the wires into two circular shapes, positioning the circles perpendicular to each other to form a globe.

    • 4

Wrap the English ivy plant around the twisted trunk of the topiary tree form and the globe for the top of the tree.

    • 5

Water the topiary tree thoroughly, and fertilize weekly with 10-10-10 fertilizer.
