Orchids in the Phalaenopsis genus grow well in terrariums. The Smithsonian gardens describe these orchids as, "the best orchid for growing in the home." Known as moth orchids, these hardy plants produce long-lasting flowers that resemble flying moths or butterflies. They have wide, thick foliage and produce flowers on tall spikes." Moth orchids grow best in bright, indirect light, such as that provided by an east-facing window. Optimal daytime temperatures range from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a nighttime range of at least 60 F. Moth orchids require constant moisture but should be allowed to almost dry out between waterings.
Tropical lady's slippers (Paphiopedilum spp.) thrive in terrariums. These Asian natives have drooping, multicolored foliage and long-lasting, waxy flowers that bloom in a variety of hues and patterns. Tropical lady's slippers grow best in low-to-medium light, such as that received through an east- or north-facing window. They require very well-draining soil. They thrive in daytime temperatures between 65 and 70 F and nighttime temperatures from 58 to 60 F. All tropical lady slipper species require high humidity; between 50 and 80 percent is ideal.
Orchids from the Cymbidium genus can grow in terrariums. These orchids are classified into standard and miniatures. Standard species thrive in cooler temperatures and don't grow well in warm, humid terrariums, so choose miniatures that are more heat-tolerant. Cymbidiums require bright light all day long in cooler climates and light afternoon shade in warm regions. Budding plants prefer day temperatures between 75 and 85 F, but require cooler night temperatures, from 59 to 60 F in order to grow flower spikes. Keep cymbidiums evenly moist during the growing season -- spring and summer -- but reduce its water in the winter.
Other terrarium-compatible species include jewel orchids (Ludisia discolor), which are prized for their matte-black foliage with pink veins and maroon backs. Jewel orchids grow best in humid environments with a nighttime temperature of 65 to 75 F. This 12-inch tall plant grows best in moss and blooms with aromatic white and yellow flowers. Downy rattlesnake orchids (Goodyera pubesens) grow well in terrariums. These woodland orchids grow naturally in temperate forests and tolerate sandy, acidic soil. In a terrarium, plant them in moss, keep them moist but well drained and expose them to medium light. Downy rattlesnake orchids produce clusters of tiny, white flowers on a hairy, 6- to 18-inch tall stalk.
