How to Care for a Lipstick Vine

The lipstick vine (Aeschynanthus lobbianus) is named for its bold, red blooms that resemble lipstick in a tube when they begin to open. It has shiny, deep green foliage and can grow up to 36 inches long, making it a good choice for hanging planters. Lipstick vines are easily damaged by cold temperatures and are grown indoors in most areas. Provide them with exposure to bright, indirect sunlight, rich soil and a humid environment for lush growth and plentiful blooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a growing container with quality potting soil. Ensure that the chosen container has openings in the bottom to allow excess water to escape.

    • 2

Plant the lipstick vine at its prior level and water until the soil is moist enough to stick to your finger.

    • 3

Place the vine in a spot that receives plenty of light but is protected from direct sun and drafts.

    • 4

Keep the soil barely moist at all times.

    • 5

Feed with balanced fertilizer once each month during the growing season and bi-monthly during autumn and winter. Apply the fertilizer in the amount indicated on package directions.

    • 6

Cut the lipstick vine back to a length of approximately 6 inches after all flowers have faded.
