Remove the Z. zamiifolia from its pot and set it on three to four layers of newspapers. The newspapers help soak up the excess moisture from the roots, so change them if they become soggy. Allow the plant to sit on the newspaper while you disinfect the pot.
Discard the soil from the Z. zamiifolia's pot. Do not save it to reuse with other plants.
Scrub the pot with warm, soapy water then soak it in a solution containing 1 part household bleach and 9 parts water. Allow the pot to sit in the solution for 30 minutes, then remove it, rinse it in clear water and allow it to dry.
Check the Z. zamiifolia's roots for signs of rot. Cut away any that have an odor or are soft or rotten.
Repot the Z. zamiifolia using a light potting mix, such as one labeled for use with cacti or succulents. If you found root rot, drench the soil with a fungicide containing thiophanate-methyl.
Avoid watering the plant for two to three days after repotting. When you do water, barely moisten the soil and then allow it to become bone dry before watering again.
Place the Z. zamiifolia in a room that receives bright but filtered sunlight. Not only will this help dry the soil, but the plant does better in bright afternoon sun.
