Odor Fighting Plants

Houseplants are a natural way of cleaning harmful chemicals and noxious odors out of the home environment. Many flowering houseplants have sweetly scented blooms and some even have scented foliage. Others scrub the air they absorb of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene.
  1. Fragrant Houseplants

    • Pink jasmine offers profuse, sweetly scented flowers that work well in hanging baskets. Scented geraniums have fragrant foliage and come in scents ranging from lemon to chocolate. String of beads, wax flower and Hoya are also good choices for fragrant houseplants.

    Flowering Air Purifiers

    • While not commonly kept as houseplants, chrysanthemums and gerbera daisies can overwinter indoors in containers. According to the University of Minnesota, NASA tested them and found them excellent air purifying plants. Even if you can't keep them indoors for long periods, you can get them at many nurseries and florists throughout the year as added air fresheners for special occasions.

    Hanging Air Purifiers

    • There are several nonflowering plants with attractive foliage used in hanging baskets around the home. Among the more recognizable are English ivy, the golden pathos plant and spider plants. There are also three species of philodendron that work well as air purifiers including, heartleaf, selloum and elephant ear.

    Tall Air Purifiers

    • In addition to hanging plants, some taller air purifiers work well placed next to kitchen cabinet or even in a well-lit bathroom or common area. The snake plant and several varieties of dracaena, including Cornstalk, Red-Edge and Warneck have swordlike, spiky leaves. In contrast, weeping fig and bamboo offer a softer, standing plant.
