How to Grow Nepenthes Mikei

Nepenthes mikei is a pitcher plant native to Sumatra. The plant thrives in tropical conditions, but will also grow well indoors if you keep the temperature warm and the plant's foliage moist. It grows in a potting medium similar to orchid potting mix, and is even fertilized with orchid fertilizer. The plant produces upright pitchers that are red, purple or black in color, depending on the ambient light.

Instructions

    • 1

Pot the Nepenthes mikei in a mixture of equal parts sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, bark and peat moss. Keep the pot in a warm spot, out of direct sunlight.

    • 2

Water whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. Once the liquid comes through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, empty the tray under the pot. Never let the roots sit in water, or they will rot.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle with clean water. Mist the plant daily. Keep the temperature in the room between 65 and 85 degrees F.

    • 4

Fertilize the potting mix with orchid fertilizer. Dilute the fertilizer with water to one-quarter strength, then apply according to the package directions.
