How to Build a Seed-Starter Box for Kids

Many adult gardeners start seeds indoors in the winter to produce seedlings large enough to plant once the weather warms up. However, starting seeds indoors any time of the year is a great way to teach kids about nature. While stores sell many types of seed starters, there’s no need to purchase one when you can simply build one. Seeds starters are made of basic household items that kids can assemble with minimal adult assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a rectangular or square plastic storage box at least 3 inches high. Although any color container will work, clear boxes allow children to observe the seedling’s root growth.

    • 2

Turn the plastic box upside down and create at least 5 to 6 holes on the bottom to provide water drainage. Use a sharp knife tip, an ice pick or a 1/4-inch drill bit. Adults must perform this step for safety reasons.

    • 3

Spread newspaper on a table and place the storage box right side up in the center.

    • 4

Cut open a bag of seed-starting soil mix and allow the kids to fill the box until the mixture reaches 1 inch from the top rim. Tell the kids to smooth out the top of the soil, but not pack it down.

    • 5

Spread seed packets on the table and allow the kids to choose which one they want to plant. Tear open the packets carefully and pour the seeds into the kids' hands.

    • 6

Instruct the kids to spread the seeds on the surface of the soil approximately 1 inch apart. Laying a ruler on the soil assists them in determining the proper distance.

    • 7

Read the seed packet to determine how deep to plant the seeds, which ranges from ¼ inch to 1 inch. Place the ruler vertically on top of the soil line and have the kids add more soil on top of the seeds until the soil reaches the proper planting depth.

    • 8

Fill a pitcher with water and help the kids as the pour in only enough to completely dampen the soil.

    • 9

Tear off a piece of clear plastic wrap and hand it to the child, instructing them to cover the entire top of the seed-starter box.

    • 10

Locate a warm place, such as a windowsill, that is within reach of the children so they may observe the seed growth daily. Once the seeds sprout, they require at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
