How to Keep Peace Lily Leaves Shiny

Healthy peace lilies produce glossy green foliage that has a natural sheen. When grown inside the home, dust and debris from the air may collect on the leaves, dulling their appearance. But appearance shouldn't be your only concern. According to horticulturist Dr. Dave Williams at the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, dirty and dusty leaves inhibit the plant's ability to use the sun's energy in photosynthesis. Keeping leaves clean promotes healthy growth and brings out the natural shine of healthy foliage.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the top and bottom of your peace lily leaves with a damp paper towel to remove dust and residue from the air. Use care to clean each leaf on the plant.

    • 2

Allow the leaves to dry naturally. In most cases, foliage is returned to its natural state and produces a healthy glow.

Apply commercial leaf shine products following the instructions on the container. Coat only the upper side of the leaves. Coating the underside of the leaves may clog the stoma used for transpiration. Clogged stomas result in death of the plant. Carol Savonen from the Oregon State University Extension recommends testing products on a leaf or two and waiting 24 hours to see if your plant tolerates the product.
