How to Care for a Table Top Palm Plant

The table top palm is also known as the parlor palm, the neanthe bella palm or Chamaedorea elegans. It’s native to Mexico and Guatemala but is grown in the United States as a houseplant. The table top palm grows well in low light conditions and has very few problems, making it an ideal houseplant for homes and offices. With moderate attention, the table top palm will thrive in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the table top palm in a room with mild temperatures, from 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Set the palm in a location with filtered light from a window. The light should be bright enough to cast a shadow. Avoid direct light from the sun.

    • 3

Check the table top palm twice a week to see if it needs to be watered. Allow the soil in small pots to dry out on the surface between watering, and allow the soil to dry out to 1 inch deep in large pots between watering. Water the palm when the soil has dried. Add enough water that it drips out of the bottom of the pot.

Fertilize the parlor palm with 1 to 2 tablespoons of houseplant fertilizer per month in the spring and summer. Give the palm 1 to 2 tablespoons of the fertilizer every other month during the winter.
