How to Germinate Seeds in Egg Cartons

Using egg cartons to germinate seeds, which is also called starting seeds, is an excellent way to reuse the cartons. The small spaces are just large enough to hold the moist soil necessary for seed germination. Once you transplant the seedlings, you can compost the carton if it is cardboard. Germination time depends on the species you are growing, so check your seed packet or consult your local nursery to find when you need to plant the seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the lid off the egg carton. Throw it away or compost it, if it is cardboard.

    • 2

Fill your sink with 1 tablespoon bleach and five gallons of water. Submerge the carton in the bleach water to sterilize it. Let it soak for 30 seconds, then take it out and let it air dry.

    • 3

Poke a drainage hole on the bottom of each egg space in the carton. Use a sharp, pointy knife.

    • 4

Fill the egg carton spaces with organic potting mix. Insert one seed into the potting mix in each egg space at the depth directed on the seed packet.

    • 5

Water the potting mix until it settles. Cover the egg carton with a piece of plastic wrap and set it on a cookie sheet so you do not get dirt or water on your windowsill.

    • 6

Set the tray in a bright, sunny window. Water frequently enough to keep the soil moist to the touch, but not soaking wet. When the plants have germinated, you can transplant them to individual pots.
