How to Get Rid of Pests on African Violets

Chewing, sucking and nuisance are the three types of pests that trouble the African violet, according to entomologist Charles L. Cole. From the roots to the tips of the African violet's leaves, a pest finds it delectable. Chewing pests leave telltale signs, such as holes in leaves and flower petals. If the African violet suffers wilting or suddenly sports a fuzzy, black substance on the foliage, it is most likely infested with sucking pests. There are the nuisance pests that don't damage the African violet, but are annoying.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the pest infesting the African violet. American cockroaches and thrips, tiny, yellow insects, are the most common chewing insects. Aphids, mites and mealybugs are typically responsible for sucking damage. If you are unable to identify a pest, take one to the county cooperative extension office in your area for identification.

Choose a pesticide labeled both for the particular pest and for use on African violets. Some of the harsher insecticides damage foliage.

    • 3

Spray the African violet with the insecticide according to package instructions. You may need to reapply at particular intervals, so be sure to read the entire label.
