The Care Instructions for a Dracaena Massangeana

Dracaena massangeana, also known as the corn plant, is grown for its long, arching leaves. These have a broad, yellow stripe down the middle and grow to 36 inches. Plants reach 5 feet in height and feature a stout stem topped with a tuft of leaves. Dracaena massangeana tolerates low light but grows best in a bright room. It is seldom bothered by pests but is vulnerable to mineral salt poisoning if these are allowed to build up in the soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your Dracaena massangeana close to a south- or west-facing window that receives bright, indirect sunlight. A room with an average day temperature of between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. Rotate the pot every week to make sure all parts of the plant grow at the same speed.

    • 2

Water Dracaena massangeana when the surface of its soil is completely dry. Provide enough water to soak the soil thoroughly. Never leave your Dracaena massangeana pot sitting in a container of water, as this starves the roots of oxygen and can cause them to die and rot. Mist daily during the winter months when artificial heating lowers humidity levels.

    • 3

Fertilize every month during the spring and summer months with a liquid feed formulated for houseplants. Flush out the soil by soaking it with a volume of water equal to that of the pot as soon as you see any white deposit on the surface of the soil or if your Dracaena massangeana develops brown leaf margins.

    • 4

Repot your Dracaena massangeana when it becomes top heavy or when its roots emerge from the drainage hole at the bottom of its pot. Use a peat-based compost mixed with up to 20 percent sand for drainage. Plant Dracaena massangeana in a heavy ceramic container to prevent it from toppling over.
