How to Grow Dracaena Michiko

Dracaenas -- common houseplants -- are members of the agave family. The Michiko (Dracaena fragrans "Michiko”) variety is native to tropical regions of Africa. If you have a bare, narrow space indoors, consider filling it with Michiko. It grows to 6 feet in height with a slender 1- to 4-foot spread. Michiko is a slow grower, as well, making it an ideal indoor plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant Michiko in a combination of equal parts of potting soil, pine bark and vermiculite. This mixture provides the quick drainage the plant requires.

    • 2

Place Michiko in an area where it receives lots of sunlight. Some plants adapt easily to wherever they are placed. With others, it may take some trial and error. Keep an eye on the Michiko's foliage. If it seems to be losing color or it drops leaves, place it in a shadier location.

    • 3

Place a humidifier in the room with the Michiko dracaena. A tropical plant, it requires lots of moisture in the air.

    • 4

Use bottled water without fluoride, at room temperature, when you water the Michiko dracaena. Water when a finger poked into the soil, to the first knuckle, comes out dry.

    • 5

Fertilize Michiko with a houseplant fertilizer. Look for one that is labeled as water soluble and containing micronutrients. Apply the amount suggested on the package for the size of your tree every month, beginning when you see new growth in spring and stopping in September.
