How to Attach a Staghorn Fern on Wood

Staghorn ferns are epiphytes -- they can grow in a soil-free environment. You can mount your indoor staghorn fern to a piece of wood such as driftwood, a wood plaque or bark. Use a piece of wood that is larger than your fern so you will not have to transplant it too often. Once the fern is mounted, hang it in indirect sunlight in a warm spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the mounting board over so the back faces you. Drill two pilot holes in the back of the mounting wood, 2 inches under the top edge and 1 inch in from each side. Screw one eye hook into each hole.

    • 2

String one end of a length of picture frame wire through each eye hook. Wrap the ends of the wire around the wire length to secure it in place. Turn the mounting board over.

    • 3

Fill the sink with lukewarm water. Submerge the sphagnum moss in the water and let it soak overnight.

    • 4

Set the staghorn fern pot in the middle of the piece of wood. Hammer one nail into the wood, 2 inches to the left of the pot. Hammer a second nail into the wood, 2 inches to the right of the pot. Leave 1/4 inch of the nail above the wood so you can secure fishing line to it.

    • 5

Wring out the sphagnum moss so it is damp but not dripping wet. Create a bed of moss on the wood, between the nails. Make a small depression in the middle of the moss bed.

    • 6

Remove the fern from the container and set it in the middle of the moss bed. Arrange the roots out over the moss bed, then cover the roots with additional sphagnum moss.

    • 7

Tie the loose end of fishing line to one of the nails. Bring the line around the top of the moss bed and wrap it around the second nail. Bring the line under the fern, across the bottom of the moss and back to the first nail.

    • 8

Wrap the fishing line around the two nails twice more, securing the moss bed to the wood. Cut the line and tie the loose end to one of the nail heads. Hammer the nails all the way into the wood. Mount the wood from the picture frame wire.
