Use window boxes for planting carrots. A window box 12 inches deep will best accommodate the downward growth of carrots. In a window box 4 inches wide, 18 inches long and 12 inches deep, you may plant two rows of nine carrots, for a total of eighteen carrots per window box.
Fill window boxes with a 1:1 ratio of potting soil and organic compost. Moisten the soil slightly.
Use your finger to make holes approximately 1/2-inch deep about 1-inch apart.
Drop two carrot seeds into each hole, and then brush a little dirt over the seeds to cover them. Do not pack the soil down on top of the seeds.
Water the soil thoroughly, but be sure it's not waterlogged.
When the seeds sprout through the soil, thin to one plant per inch.
Fill a 12-inch plastic pot with a 1:1 mixture of potting soil and organic compost. Moisten the soil slightly.
Poke a 1-inch-deep hole in the center of the soil with your finger.
Drop two cucumber seeds into each hole and brush soil over the top. Do not pack the soil over the seeds.
Water the soil well. Cucumbers have shallow roots, so they need their soil to be kept moist at all times.
Place a tomato cage in each pot to support growing cucumber vines.
When the seeds sprout, remove any extra seedlings, leaving just one plant per pot.
