How to Grow Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora From Plantlets After Flowering

Often referred to as the paddle or flapjack plant, the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is a succulent, prized for its round, broad foliage and clusters of unusual, tubular flowers. When provided enough sunlight, the thick, fleshy leaves develop a bright red or copper-colored outer margin. The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is native to the South African Desert. It may be grown outdoors with protection in tropical and subtropical climates, but is used as a houseplant in many regions. Propagation by rooting offsets (plantlets) is done after the plant has flowered.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour coarse sand into a tray, about 3/4-inch deep. Level the sand. Fill the potting containers with dampened sterile rooting medium, to 1/2 inch from the top. Place the filled containers on the sand bed.

    • 2

Make a hole in the center of the rooting medium in each container, using the eraser-end of a pencil or other stick, 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in diameter. The holes should be about 1/2-inch deep.

    • 3

Cut the offset from the edge of the leaf by cutting a small piece of the leaf that is attached to the offset. This can be done without removing the leaf from the plant. Insert bottom end of the offset into the hole in the rooting medium. Gently press the rooting medium around the base of the offset, covering any visible roots and the leaf cutting. Continue to plant an offset in each potting container in the tray.

    • 4

Fill a flexible cup with water. Gently pour a thin stream of water around each offset. Should watering expose the leaf or roots of the offset, re-cover them with rooting medium. Excess water will drain into the sand in the tray. As the water evaporates, the humidity will encourage rooting.

Place the tray in an area with indirect sunlight. Feel the rooting medium each day and water to keep the medium moist. In a few weeks, you should see significant growth. If the plants become leggy, transplant them and move them to a sunnier spot.
