How to Grow a Cataractarum Palm Tree in Your Home During the Winter

Cataractarum palms are commonly known as cat palms or the Mexican hat palm. They are native plants to southeastern Mexico. They are hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9 through 11. In areas below 9 this palm is grown indoors. During the winter months, growing this palm can be tricky, unless you know how to care for them. It is a trunkless palm that grows from 5 to 10 feet tall with the width equal to the height.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a container that is 3 inches larger than the root ball.

    • 2

Cover the drainage holes with rocks or shards of clay pots. Fill the pot with well-draining potting soil. You can make your own potting soil by combining equal amounts of compost, perlite and peat moss together.

    • 3

Find a window that faces south or east. Cataractarum palms grow best in an area that receives low light or filtered light.

    • 4

Water the palm to keep the soil moist but not completely saturated. Do not allow the soil to dry out. However, be careful not to give the Cataractarum palm too much water, as this can cause the roots to rot.

    • 5

Fill a sprayer bottle with tepid water and mist the palm daily.

    • 6

Inspect the palm for spider mites, palm aphids or scale. If you find these pests on your palm, move the plant to a different room away from other plants. Treat the plant by spraying or wiping down the leaves and stems with insecticidal soap. Mix and apply according to label directions. You may also use a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol to remove the bugs. Change the cotton ball when it becomes dirty or full of the pests. You can gently scrap the scale insects away with your fingernail. You may need to repeat this process every two to three days.
