How to Grow Philodendron Cuttings

Philodendrons produce heart-shaped leaves on long vines, making them suitable houseplants for hanging baskets or planters. Often grown for their attractive foliage and ability to thrive in low light conditions, philodendrons grace the interior of homes and offices across much of America. These low-maintenance houseplants thrive with once a week watering and occasional fertilizer, and propagate easily from stem cuttings.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4- to 6-inch section from the growing tip of the vine. Make the cut 1/4 inch below a leaf node. This area forms roots quickly.

    • 2

Remove the leaves from the bottom 2 to 3 inches of the stem cutting, leaving at least two leaves on the cuttings. Leaves that submerge in the water rot quickly contaminating the water.

    • 3

Place the cutting in a glass or vase of water. Although it is not necessary a clear container allows you to observe the water level and formation of new roots.

    • 4

Place the glass in an area that receives bright indirect light. A northern window works well for rooting stem cuttings. Direct sunlight heat the contents of the glass in the afternoon sun and may damage young roots.

    • 5

Check the vase daily for any signs of stagnation. If the water smells or is cloudy, pour the water off and fill the vase with fresh water. Otherwise refill the vase to original level as water evaporates.

    • 6

Watch for the emergence of roots. Rooting occurs within two to three weeks.

    • 7

Fill plant pots three-fourths of the way with a mixture of equal parts peat moss, perlite and potting soil.

    • 8

Position the cuttings into the soil using care not to injure tender young roots. Spread the roots over the soil and gently fill in around the roots with fresh soil. Firm the soil down gently to secure the cuttings.Water thoroughly until water runs freely through the bottom of the pot.

    • 9

Place the pot in similar lighting to the original plant and resume regular care.
